Cleaning the Piazza San Marco

At about 8h I woke up. I was downstairs 30 minutes later for breakfast. There were more people in the dinning room than the previous day! I had 3 Nutella breadrolls and a croissant with some juice. With a full belly I headed out to explore more of Venice. I took the Vaporetto boat all the way to the Ferrovia stop, North of the island. There I walked a bit in the Cannaregio neighbourhood, the Campo San Germia, the Rio Terra San Leonardo, etc. It was all near the train station and I found it very touristy and not really the Venice I had come to know over the past 2 days.

So I took a Vaporetto boat from S. Mercuola to San Stae in order to cross the Grand Canal and end up in the lovely San Polo neighbourhood. There I walked along nice little streets and canals. I enjoyed the Campo San Giacomo dell' Orio a lot. I saw real Venetian residents on a typical Sunday morning it seems. A man standing in the middle of the place reading a newspaper, a woman at a café working to set up the tables, a couple with a baby strolling along, an old lady walking with her dog talking to it as if it was an old friend. There were only 2-3 tourists so the Campo had a nice feel to it. After sitting on a bench for a little while I headed for Campo Nazario Sauro with nice houses, and then South towards the Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista, a school, it was beautiful with a church by its side. Then down to Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari but it did not open until 13h and it was about 12h. So I went around to another school, Scuola Grande di San Rocco. I didn't want to pay the 5 Euros to get in so I admired it from outside. A woman was there signing opera like songs. I bought an ice cream but it was not as nice as the one from Nico. Then I went to sit on the Campo in front of the Frari church. Near me a guy was drawing the church, a pretty nice drawing too! A guitar player came to perform. I gave him 1 Euro on my way in the church... I enjoyed his music while I was waiting so! The church was nice but not as spectacular as my guide book described it! After visiting the church I bought some bottled water... But it was mineral with bubbles and salty! I wanted plain water... But I was so thirsty it was still alright.

Then I continued on to Campo San Polo walking towards the Vaporetto boat stop of San Silvestro. There I took the boat which brought me back at San Marco. I went to the hotel to freshen up a bit and figure out what to visit next. I thought about going to see the Peggy Guggenheim collection but decided agains't it. I wanted to see more of Venice's little streets and canals. So I walked along the Bacino di San Marco passing by Doges Palace, the Sigh Bridge, walking along the Riva Degli and Schiavoni. Then I went to Campo Bandiera E Moro and towards Arsenale. Venice built on water was a powerful maritime force and it was here that boats were built. It was a beautiful structure with a big canal, bridges, towers, etc. I wanted to visit it but it was closed. Then I went East walking on the Via Giuseppe Garibaldi. It was filled with restaurants and cafés but they were mostly closed so it was quite tranquile. I walked through the Vale Giuseppe Gribaldi gardens and back west towards the Piazza San Marco on the Riva's longing the Bacino and Canale di San Marco. I found a little restaurant called San Giorgio. People in Venice go out to eat around 19h or later. But it was 18h and I was hungry. The restaurant I found was not like others. Others had empty terraces. This one had a table with 5 people and another with a couple seated. So I wouldn't feel too alone! My table had a view on the water and Piazza San Marco in the distance. I ordered lasagna and a Sprite. The food was alright. Then I walked back to the hotel making a small stop at the Piazza San Marco. I was leaving in the morning... This would be my last look at the Piazza I thought...!
