3 January 2001 - Amsterdam - Holland
Christelle's House

Up early again for another big day of tourism in Amsterdam. Inside the city again, on the Prinsengracht, I saw my dream Houseboat (Picture 1). It's the nicest one I saw there I think. People started living in these boats when there was a problem finding place for them to stay, there weren't enough houses. The canals are a special thing in Holland. It is so beautiful too, with the bikes and the different architecture for the houses (Picture 2).

We decided to go to the Anne Frank museum. Anne was a little Jewish girl that stayed hidden from the Germans during WW2 for 5 years. We saw the library hiding the door to their appartment for these 5 years. The little rooms were completely dark, and the living space was small for the number of people there. We also saw movies about the concentration camps, etc. It saddened me, but I was also very angry, why would they do that to Jewish people!???!!! We left the Anne Frank huis to go to Holland Experience.

On the way, we stopped at the Waterlooplein (Picture 3), where there is the biggest flea market in Amsterdam. There was so many things for sale there, I bought a souvenir for my landlord, she had asked for a coffee mug for her collection. Holland Experience is a 3D movie theater (Pictures 4 & 5). In 30 minutes, we got to see a collage of little videos showing different parts of Holland in 3D with these weird glasses. We were seated on a moving platform, in an aircraft seat. I would have liked it more if there would have been audio explaining what we were seeing on the screen, but my friend did a great job telling me the main points.

Back at the Centraal Station, I saw hundreds of bikes and I was amazed, so my friend immortalized the moment (Picture 6). So many bicycles, how do people find their bike in that??! my friend told me some paint their bikes as ugly as possible so no one wants to steal it. Everyone rides on bikes in this country, from the youngest to the oldest.

Afterwards we went to take a walk in the Jordaan. It was very nice. The Jordaan was a neighbourhood built for workers, craft people, etc, the lower class people. As more and more people came to live there, the neighbourhood transformed into a labyrinth of little roads and tiny canals. We did one of the walking routes in my touristic book and saw the Claes Claszhofje, an old people's house (Picture 7), typical Amsterdam houses (Picture 8), a bird on a car (Picture 9) in the city (and it didn't even move when we approached!), and the Westerkerk (Picture 10), a Renaissance Church with a 85m church tower.

After we went to the Leidseplein to try and find a good restaurant. It took like an hour, but we finally found the perfect place to have dinner, the Indonesian Puri Mas restaurant (Picture 11). We had the best dinner ever, so many different plates, it was excellent. There was 3 people waiting at the door for us, one to open the door, the others to take our coats. We got our table and ordered. Me a soup and my friend and I both got a main dish to share together. The food was VERY spicy, but yummy. A perfect ending to another great day!
