9 May 2002 - Lesvos - Greece

Boat in Petra

We got up early to be able to talk to the tour guide Karen about the excursion from the day before. I prepared fruit which we ate outside on the front terrace while waiting. It's the first time the sun wasn't shining... Around 10am she arrived. We told her all about how the excursion from the previous day went wrong. She thought the Greek guide who gave the tour was very incompetent ("een muts" in Dutch = "a cunt") and was really wondering what happened with her! Not only didn't we get to see the water mill, but it was not even meant for people who went on the walk. The mill was for non walkers like us, and no one told us it was so close and to go see it... The walkers were supposed to meet us back at the village after their walk. We were also supposed to visit a museum, which the guide skipped. Karen said she would try to arrange something and we'd meet her around 6pm for an update.

So we went into town! We first bought a few souvenirs for our family and ourselves, bought bread and then went to the post office to mail our last postcards. We then decided it would be nice to have a real good breakfast on our last whole day in Greece. So we sat on the terrace of a resto and ordered yummy drinks and pancakes with fruits and chocolate. That's when the sun started to appear through the clouds. After filling our bellies, we went for a walk along the beach of Petra. At first he did not want to walk in the sand so he went on the boulevard. He later decided to join me and we both walked on the beach looking for special rocks for his sister. At the end of the beach we saw a few Greek boats which made perfect subjects for pictures so we spent quite some time there before walking back home on the main road.

Back at Sunrise we just chilled on the terrace while enjoying the sun, played on the GBA and I took a little nap. It was then already 5pm and time to eat a little snack and get ready to leave for our donkey riding adventure. We first met up with 2 other people at a gas station, where Karen also came with a bottle of Greek wine (most expensive one she could find) as a present to make up for the sucky tour the day before and to apologize. But she explained that the tour wasn't under her responsibility, but under Hellenic Island Tours (?) and she could not do more than offer us that present.

We then took a taxi with the other 2 people to go to Molyvos where the tour began. The donkeys were very sweet. When waiting to have one assigned to us, Barbara (donkey) walked towards us and stopped beside my friend. She later became my donkey for the evening. my friend's donkey was 'Popy'. We left direction Eftalou. Riding the donkeys there was very nice, you had a beautiful view on nature, and it was so funny when the donkeys would start racing each other or stop at once to go eat grass. my friend's donkey, a huge white one which was very fast & had a biiiig appetite (it always stopped after gaining a lead to eat grass on the side of the path) was the leader of the group, while my donkey, Barbara, just stayed in the middle all the time. All together we were 10 donkeys and 2 horses riding.

We got to the beach just in time to see the sunset & take pictures of the landscape. A fisherman joined us at the beach (in his little boat). He went to lay a net in the sea and later brought back some fish that he roasted on the BBQ for the ones who wanted to taste it. He was also flirting with one of the Dutch ladies a lot! We also went to see the Eftalou hot springs, but they weren't nearly as nice as the one I went in!! We then waited on the beach for our BBQ: donkey meat (naa, pork! It was a joke from the owner-guide), Greek salad & bread. It was delicious, but I didn't have enough because I was still hungry after my plate. Oh well... We then waited a loooong while just sitting there with the Greek guide & his daughter singing Greek songs. I was glad I had brought a warm shirt & my coat because at night it was quite chilly and windy by the sea side.

Around 10pm we left to return on our donkeys. It was pretty dark so you couldn't see anything. It was not as enjoyable as the way to the beach because I had to pull a lot on the cord to tell Barbara to go on the good side of the street... I don't think she was seeing much! After reaching the donkey farm, the owner brought us back to Petra in his old van. He was a bit drunk so he was swaying a lot on the road... Not too nice! At the apartment, we had cold showers (no hot water when the sun isn't shining!) and I started to pack my bag. Then we went to sleep!
