We got up at 6h40 Newfoundland time (5h10 Québec time!) and got ready for the day! We then had breakfast… I had the traditional eggs, toast and bacon while my boyfriend had blueberry pancakes. It was an ok breakfast. Then we discussed if we should go on the boat tour or not. The weather was quite uncertain, rainy, foggy, cloudy. But I really wanted to do the tour!
We went to the visitor's centre but that was not opened yet. Then we went to the Ocean View Motel to ask about the tour… They told us we could buy our tickets right at the chalet where the tour began. We thought that was the smartest thing to do. That way if we got there and it rained we could just skip it.
So off we went to the Western Brook Pond! We drove to the parking lot. And then did the supposed 45 minutes walk in 30 minutes! We bought our tickets. The tour guide announced that they were not sure of the conditions in the fjord. We'd go to the first waterfall. If it was ok we'd get the whole tour. If it wasn't we'd come back and be reimbursed. So off we went! I liked the tour a lot! The mountains along the water were so high, abrupt and impressive! With the fog it also brought an element of mystique. On the way back to the chalet they played some Newfie music again… It was funny!
Then we started the drive to Port-Aux-Basques. We stopped to the SS Ethie shipwreck site. It was amazing to see there was still so much debris there after all these years! We then stopped in Cornerbrook for lunch, at Mary Browns for fried chicken.
In Port-Aux-Basques we got our tickets for the 0h ferry around 18h. So we had quite a lot of time to waste! We went to town and found the cinema. But it was a tiny one, showing one movie “Talladega Nights” at 20h! We then went to the information centre but the lady didn't have very many suggestions of activities for us! So in the parking lot we attempted a second manual driving lesson. I was good with going reverse but I wasn't able to do the 1 st gear without it dying! I sucked!
We then went to a small cute beach in the village. We walked barefoot on the cold sand and even dipped our feet in the freezing water! It was fun doing this together… As the sun slowly went down… On the beach I found a small bouncy ball! Taking the sand off of our feet was not such an easy task… Then we went to the boardwalk area though all the cute little kiosks were closed it was a pretty area. We played with my bouncy ball. I was scared my boyfriend wouldn't catch it and it would fall in the water. In the end I was the one who missed and down it went! Crap! I lost my ball!
We went to the ferry and put the car in line to wait. We then went inside the terminal where we took showers, my boyfriend first. I watched a movie during that time (Eight Below, I had seen it already) and then I went after he was done. After getting cleaned we had dinner, left-over Mary Browns. Then also some of my mom's delicious banana bread for dessert. I cried a bit, I had too many emotions… My boyfriend comforted me!
And then it was time to get on the boat! We quickly found our bunks. This time we got really comfortable because my mom had given me a set of sheets to put on the mattress so it was better than just the blanket they give you!
