On Saturday at about 8h I was up. I got ready for the day and headed downstairs for breakfast. The bar area at the reception desk was transformed into a breakfast buffet. It was filled with delicious stuff...! I didn't know what to pick. I had... thick yogourt topped with fresh raspberries, a chocolate filled croissant, a pancake, pineapple juice (I thought it was pear...) and fruit salad. Just for the breakfast it made the price of the room worth it!
Then I headed out. I walked towards the City Hall and thn to the Christianborg castle. There I walked all around the area which was huge. This castle is used as a parliament and a court amongst other things. The gardens near the Royal Library were great with ducks (and one baby duck) swimming in the fountain. I waited until 11h for the tour of the reception rooms. The guide was informative but sometimes a bit slow. I guess he had to translate his thoughts from Danish to English in his head first...! The rooms were grand. I saw the room for example where the Royalty grants the diplomatic status to someone or the room where big funtions are held, etc. In that main grand room there were new tapestries on the walls. At first they seemed out of place, colourful and new design/art compared to the traditional castle decoration but when the guide explained what was in the tapestries I liked them a lot! Each of them (there were many, 15 or so) was about a period of time in Danish history, with important events as well as inventions, etc.
After the tour I went to get a boat near the Holmen church to tour the Copenhagen waters. It was quite cheap and the boat was not full so it was nice to have room to go from one side of the boat to the other accordingly to what there was to see! I enjoyed the sights of the Little Mermaid statue, the new Opera House and Christianshavn the most while on the boat.
Then I walked towards Ostergade. I noticed how the Danish people park their bicycle compared to the Dutch. The Dutch make sure it's locked to something that cannot movie, a pole or a bridge or something. But Danish people just use the bike stand and lock both wheels and that's it. So someone could come by and put all the bikes in a truck and take the locks off at home! I stopped to shop at Illum for my mom's birthday gift. I found something nice made in Denmark! Then I went to the store's café for lunch. I ordered a lasagna (which came with a delicious salad) and a Sprite to drink. After my meal I went on with my walk through Copenhagen. I arrived at a huge circle called Kongens Nytorv where in the middle there was a park area and a statue and it was surrounded by huge majestic buildings.
Then I went to walk along Nyhavn. But by then it was the middle of the afternoon and the place was packed with tourist. It was impossible to walk and enjoy the sights. Although it was filled with tourists I was still amazed at how pretty it was... A canal... Boats docked on the side of the canal. Colourful houses with cafés and restaurants. Leaving the jam packed Nyhavn I walked along Gothersgade.
I stopped at a 7Eleven convenience store to buy something to drink and sweets to munch on. Then off to the Rosenborg gardens and to the Rosenborg Castle. I visited the inside of the castle as well as the treasury rooms. These were the most interesting: gold items, fragile glass, firearms, jewelry and the royal crowns! The castle was guarded outside by two armed soldiers.
Then I walked back to the hotel. I was very tired. I stopped at a Netto supermarket along the way to buy 2 apples and chocolate chip cookes. It was much cheaper than at the 7Eleven store! I also stopped at another store that had a post office sign to buy a few stamps. I had seen postcards in stores all day but none had stamps so when I saw this one had stamps I bought some! At the hotel I rested in my room from 17h to 21h. I slept, watched television, etc. I watched a part of a movie and was reading the subtitles. Here, as well as in The Netherlands, they do not synchonise the translation like we do in Quebec (for English to French) but have translated subtitles instead. So I was reading the words and trying to find out which word was what. Danish may seem like Dutch some words but I couldn't read much of the subtitles! After resting I got ready to head out again for the evening.
Then I went out again to the Tivoli amusement park. Along the way I saw a Danish driver that was being stopped by cops, presumably for speeding... Tivoli was very crowded. It was nice because it did not feel like a commercial environment but more really like a special fairy tale place. I didn't spend too much, my entrance ticket and food. So it can be cheap enough for an evening out if you don't do rides and such. I walked around looking at the different things: fountains, music by a big band or a smaller jazz ensemble with dancing couples - old and younger - in front of the stage, other people trying games like the hammer you hit to measure how strong you are, kids enjoying the different rides, fireworks. I liked the lights when it got darker. I had dinner there too... I had 2 little pancakes with strawberry jam and a yummy hot chocolate to warm up a bit as it was not really warm outside. I got my hot chocolate right away. But the pancakes had to be made. The lady gave me a number and she said we'll call it out when it's ready. I had to specify to call it out in English... If she called out 70 in Danish my pancakes would stay at the counter the whole evening! But I did get my meal. At about 0h I left Tivoli and headed to the hotel. After a shower in the delicious shower I went to bed, tired but happy to be in Copenhagen in my beautiful hotel room.
