So I left the house at 9h15 to get the 9h30 tram to the central train station. I got aboard, got my ticket and sat down. Then the tram moved about 5 m and stopped. A message was told that the tram could not ride anymore, it was broken, something with power. So I asked the tram guy how to get to central station as soon as possible! It was now 9h40 and my train left at 10h23. So I walked very quickly about 3 stops further where I was told the bus 18 went to central station but I got lucky and a tram 13 arrived from another direction (a detour) and I was able to get to the train station on time! I wanted a relaxing morning that's why I had planned sufficient time and ended up having to rush and stress over getting there on time!
The train to Antwerpen was alright when in The Netherlands. In Roosendaal we had to wait 10 minutes extra for the Belgian train controller. Once we crossed over to Belgium the train became a stop train, stopping at each and every tiny station. For example in Kijkuit, which means watch out, where there was absolutely nothing more than a field with cows on one side and on the other the train platform! We got over 1h delay because of these stops. And then the controller said they would not go to Antwerpen central station where I wanted to change train but only in Antwerpen Berchem! The trip which was originally 2h long ended up being 3h15! So there I went to the train ticket counter and asked how to get to my destination, Leuven, and bought a ticket. The lady kindly helped me. Then after 10 minutes the train arrived. This time the train was on time and within an hour I was in Leuven. I checked in at the hostel (very easy to find, 2 minute away from the station). The hostel was new and modern, very clean. There was a complete bathroom (shower, toilet, sink) plus an extra toilet and sink for the 6 people in the room. That's luxury for a hostel! In Australia I've stayed at hostels where you have to share that with 20 people!
After settling in (making the bed, taking things out of my bag, etc) I washed up a bit and then left for the festival site! Rock Werchter was accessible with a bus, 3 euros return ticket, and it took about 15 minutes to get there. After that it was a bit of a walk in the Belgian country side to finally arrive at the site. There I received a nice bracelet in exchange for my ticket and I went in. The area was a big and muddy. Thankfully it was not raining much otherwise it would have been so gross. When I arrived a drunk guy passing by pushed me saying I was walking in his way! What a welcome… Then I walked a bit around to see the stands and where everything was. I watched Bloc Party, Audioslave, Nine Inch Nails and Rammstein (click on the band names to view a review with pictures). At the end of the concert I started walking towards the exit. Only then I realized how close I was to the stage. There were people standing so far away that even on the giant screens the band members looked like ants! It was way worth the trip, the festival was nice!
At about 1h I was so tired and felt a bit sick because I was so thirsty. Walking back I stopped to buy a glass of Pepsi (most expensive Pepsi glass ever, 1.50 euros and it was tiny, but worth it!) and finally I reached the busses. I waited for a new one to come so that I could get a place to sit. The whole time at the festival I did not sit because it was too muddy and I didn't have a plastic bag (like many had)! At about 2h I was finally sleeping. Well trying to anyways… There was one person in the room which snored and I can't sleep well through snoring and I had forgotten my earplugs in Amsterdam! So I slept on and off until the morning.
